Author :

Abstract

Introduction and Background: Waja‘al-Mafāṣil is an Arabic term where "Waja‘" means pain and "Mafāṣil" means joints, collectively referring to joint pain. In the Unani System of Medicine (USM), it is a broad term encompassing various joint disorders such as ‘Irq al-Nasā (sciatica), Waja‘al-Warik (hip joint pain), and Niqris (gout).

Objective: This review aims to explore the Unani perspective on Waja‘al-Mafāṣil and its management, highlighting alternative approaches that are cost-effective and have fewer side effects compared to conventional therapies.

Materials and Methods: The review is based on the analysis of classical Unani texts and contemporary research articles from databases such as NCBI, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Results: The review indicates that Waja‘al-Mafāṣil is effectively managed in the Unani system through holistic approaches, including Ilaj-bil-Ghiza (dietotherapy), Ilaj-bil-Tadbeer (regimental therapy), and Ilaj-bil-Dawa (pharmacotherapy).

Conclusion: The Unani System of Medicine offers a comprehensive and effective alternative for managing Waja‘al-Mafāṣil. By addressing the root causes through temperament correction, dietary modifications, and natural remedies, reduces the reliance on conventional NSAIDs and their associated side effects. Further clinical studies are recommended to validate these traditional therapies and integrate them into mainstream healthcare for broader acceptance and accessibility.
